Driving improvement and efficiency in public procurement – why this matters
July 29, 2024
There are significant amounts of waste and duplication in public procurement
The private and public sectors play a huge role in public procurement. The UK Government spends approximately £400 billion each year on common goods and services – but there is a lot of waste and duplication in the system. Encouraging the right behaviours in public procurement will drive up efficiency and the savings achieved can be reinvested to make public procurement world class.
Key takeaways
- Reducing poor-quality frameworks and improving the offer to procurers will increase the value for money of the spend on public procurement each year
- Make better use of data and technology to increase transparency and promote competition
- Aggregation of buying and better management of goods and services categories will result in efficiency savings
- Only use direct awards where clearly justifiable as the most effective and efficient means to buy.
