About the role

The use of technology in the NHS has been fast, intense, and exciting, especially in the last year.  NHS Digital has been at the forefront of these technology and data advances, and the commercial team is a critical component of this delivery. 

We are seeking two Associate Commercial Specialists to join our team based in either our Leeds or London office. As part of our team, you will be at the forefront in delivering our ambition - Working together to harness the power of the marketplace to deliver maximum value to our healthcare system.  We do this to enable NHS Digital to support NHS staff at work, help people get the best care, and use the nation's health data to drive research and transform services.

This is your opportunity to showcase your talents and passion for the NHS and use your expertise, knowledge and skills to influence and shape the commercial service delivered to specific programmes.  You will join a team of commercial experts specialising in digital and technology and will work with some of the biggest global and health technology suppliers, ensuing that we get best value out of the significant investments we make every year. You will have the opportunity to work on a full range of commercial activities from smaller specialised areas to some of the biggest and most complex technology deals in the NHS.

In this role you will be responsible for delivering an excellent commercial service to a specific area of the business.  You will be passionate about building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders and colleagues across Commercial and a specific Directorate as well as the wider NHS Digital operation including senior managers with frontline Secondary Care organisations.  You will collaborate and engage with programmes and colleagues across all levels, providing sound advice and influencing commercial outcomes and strategies.

The ideal candidate will have experience in the technology sector and working in a complex end to end commercial environment.  They will be expected to work towards gaining accreditation at the Government Commercial Function Assessment and Development Centre (ADC).

 

As an Associate Commercial Specialist you will:

  • Work closely with programme teams, building trusted collaborative relationships ensuring the commercial team is engaged early and throughout the commercial cycle.
  • Work closely with programme teams and commercial function colleagues to identify and agree present and future needs, linkages to other activity areas and related potential needs for procurement.
  • Develop, maintain and manage a pipeline of activity for your area of responsibility.
  • Support the development and delivery of complex and novel commercial projects.
  • Review and challenge business cases to make sure they are fit for purpose.
  • Challenge sourcing strategies, where appropriate, to improve outcomes.
  • Build and maintain an understanding of relevant supply markets and business context to inform and support delivery of commercial strategies.
  • Support the Commercial team and wider stakeholders to identify and manage commercial risks and issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Oversee the realisation of benefits and cashable savings detailed in commercial sourcing strategies.
  • Provide expert advise on relevant regulations and compliance issues.
  • Ensure business continuity during any transition period and throughout the contract life, including re-procurement and exit.
  • Support commercial colleagues with delivering the overall team ambition and objectives.
  • Develop commercial understanding and competence across your area of responsibility.

About you

Some of the key skills and experience you'll bring to the role:  

  • Relevant experience working in the technology sector and an understanding of the full commercial lifecycle.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and intense organisation, comfortable with ambiguity and change.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with multiple stakeholders and quickly build strong working relationships, influencing and challenging decision making.
  • Ability to manage the delivery of multiple activities in parallel, identifying and resolving potential delivery conflicts in advance.
  • Ability to draw together and present reasonable conclusions from a wide range of incomplete and complex evidence and data; able to act or decide even when details are not clear.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex commercial concepts clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Experience in analysing options, managing trade-offs flowing from decisions and mitigating key risks.
  • Ability to manage conflict effectively and appropriately at all levels to ensure objectives are achieved.
  • Good understanding of commercial and supplier relationship management techniques and demonstrable experience of applying them in practice.
  • Strong current knowledge and understanding of contract law, adhering to appropriate Public Procurement Regulations
  • MCIPS or equivalent professional qualification and / or evidence of equivalent level of experience
